Military Officers Learn About How To Help Our Wounded And Recovering Veterans Among Other Things
Southwest FL – During our September luncheon, MOAS celebrated our Golden Anniversary. On hand to toast our success, was CAPTAIN Bob Silah, MOAA National Board member and founder of Operation Helping Hand in Tampa, FL.; LTC John Morrison, President, MOAA Florida Council of Chapters, and members from six of our Southwest Florida MOAA chapters.
Following several presentations of MOAA national awards for communications and legislative coverage, CAPTAIN Silah presented President George Tracy the MOAA commemorative certificate recognizing our 50 years of service to MOAA and the community. President Tracy was quick to point out that only through the tireless efforts of chapter officers, board members and our volunteers can we truly be effective in the community. MOAS has many successful initiatives to be proud of: our scholarship program, Support the Troops, JROTC support, and the
American Flag Initiative to name a few.
CAPTAIN Silah provided an update from the MOAA National Board meeting in Kansas City. His comments were specific about the pending 2016 Defense Authorization Bill. In this legislation there are proposals to cap pay and reduce housing allowances for active duty personnel, reduce commissary subsidies, and offload more health
care expense on retirees. He also mentioned the pending retirement reforms (from the MMRC). We’ll have much more on that in November when we bring Curt Gilroy back to learn more about these proposals and what they mean to future recruits, currently serving and retirees. CAPTAIN Silah concluded by reminding us that we are all willing volunteers and to never stop serving.
At the conclusion, CAPTAIN Silah’s guest, Mr. Bill Farrow, CW3 USA (Ret) spoke about Operation Helping Hand (OP HH).
