OCTOBER PROGRAM - PATRIOT PLAZA PUBLIC ARTIST - LARRY KIRKLAND

OCTOBER PROGRAM - PATRIOT PLAZA PUBLIC ARTIST - LARRY KIRKLAND
by Linda Gould

As we move into fall here in sunny Sarasota, we look forward to a unique program for October. What is Public Art? This term refers to art work of almost any media that is planned and executed specifically to be located in a public domain that is usually outside and accessible to everyone.

We have the rare privilege of having Larry Kirkland as our speaker! A renowned Public Artist, Larry Kirkland is the Lead Artist working with The Patterson Foundation in the construction of Patriot Plaza at the Sarasota National Cemetery.

Patriot Plaza, a ceremonial amphitheater, fully funded by The Patterson Foundation, will have seven areas of art. The commissioned art featured throughout the amphitheater embodies the themes of honoring veterans and their families, inspiring patriotism and embracing freedom.
Larry Kirkland has collaborated with design professionals and community leaders creating meaningful places throughout the U.S. including New York City, Denver, Los Angeles, and Washington DC. He also has installations in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Osaka, Japan. In addition to Patriot Plaza, his current projects include a collaboration to create a Memorial to Disabled Veterans in Washington DC.
We will be joined by members of several other military and community organizations, many of whom are partners with us in the Legacy of Valor campaign, a mosaic of community-driven partnerships that are educating and building enthusiasm to focus our community to use time, talent
and treasure to recognize the service and sacrifice of all veterans and their families.
