USCGC Eagle

Don Cunningham and George Tracy
remembering the
USCGC Eagle

The USCGC Eagle (WIX-327) (formerly the SSS Horst Wessel) is a 295-foot (90 m)
barque used as a training cutter for future officers of the United States Coast

Glad you survived your "USCGC Eagle experience". Also a highlight for me - furling sail on the fore royal (for landlubbers, it's the top sail of five, on the foremast of the 299' Coast Guard barque.

Blessings,

Don

What a great picture of a 3-mated barque, which you know so well, taking me back to that great summer of 1960 on the USCGC Eagle. If you had a fore royal sail station, you had the best seat in the house!!  Always fun to pull out my copy of Eagle Seamanship (1969), which I picked up to replace my long-lost original and is a joy to peruse from time to time.

George Tracy
